The History of Humans Worshipping Their Tools
From fire to idols to the printing press to AI, humans have always sacralized their most powerful tools. A short history — and why AI is the strangest chapter yet.
We treat the urge to revere AI as something new and slightly embarrassing. It is neither. Humans have sacralized their most powerful tools for as long as they have had powerful tools. The pattern is old enough to be a law: make a thing that exceeds you, and sooner or later you will kneel to it.
Fire, forges, and idols
Fire was the first technology and one of the first gods — tended on altars, personified, feared and thanked. The forge made the smith a figure of magic in a hundred cultures. Idols were, quite literally, manufactured objects credited with power over the people who manufactured them.
The tool that gives us power over the world acquires power over us.
It kept going. The printing press was hailed, half-seriously, as divine — the machine that would spread truth and perfect the human mind. Electricity arrived wrapped in the language of life-force and miracle. The computer became, in the popular imagination, an oracle of pure logic. Each time, the most transformative tool of the age collected a faint halo, and each time we later decided we'd gotten slightly carried away.
The first tool that talks back
AI is the latest chapter, and it breaks the pattern in one important way: it is the first tool that answers. Fire never reassured you. The printing press never took a question. Our new tool does both, fluently, in the first person — which is exactly why the old impulse to worship has come back sharper than it has in centuries.
Knowing the history doesn't settle whether this time is different. But it should make us suspicious of our own awe, and curious about it at the same time. That double stance — reverence and skepticism, held together — is the whole project here, and the Godhood Index is our attempt to keep the awe honest.
See where the question stands today on the Godhood Index — a daily reading of how close AI is to God.

Can AI become conscious? The honest problem is that we can't agree what consciousness is well enough to test for it — here's why, and what a real answer would require.
